when your travelling on the other side of the world and go into a travel agent to arrange where your going next you see 5 cities in the Australia section: Melbourne,Sydney,Alice springs,Brisbane and Cairns NOT! brownsville
Well 'D', obviously. Cairns is a holiday destination and deservedly so, but why take a jibe at Townsville? What have they done to you? Is it because a)their economy is not struggling, b)they have 4 national sporting teams, c) the V8s, d) a better university or e)the largest military ba<x>se in the southern hemisphere? Again, this stupid rivallry is ridiculous but these are the facts. Get over it already.

WEll well well looks like our "southern sister" is at it again... gloating over the fact that they got the V8's...Its a pity that the audience watching the race on tv only got to see a brown hill and the sea....what a waste!!
Yeah, but you've missed the point. Townsvile got the V8s and Cairns didn't. Someone's jealous. Even the Cairns Post heaped praise on Townsville and how they ran the event. Only wish they would get behind the Cowboys and Fury more. They still can't seem to hack that those teams are ba<x>sed in Townsville, yet they represent the whole of NQ (yes, that includes FNQ). Not trying to take sides here, just giving the facts.

Interesting comments...but seriously lets consider the facts...
1) Townsville only got the v8's due to constant whinging and crying to the gvt of the day and crying foul play (a known habit of Townsville)
2) The Cowboys & Fury are Townsville teams yes, however they have no immediate plans of ever playing in Cairns! The Cowboys tried it a few years ago (but that didnt work) and i dont think the Fury are that keen really.... Further more IF and when Cairns ever decides to get a team... You can guarantee that the FURY & COWBOYS will do all they can to try and stop Cairns, By either enticing Cairns with more home games. When they should've thought of the concept long before!

Well Adam, let's conisder the following:
1) all that "constant whinging and crying" for V8s ended up injecting about $20 million into Townsville's economy-http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2009/09/03/76591_v8.html.
I think that's a pretty good return on an investment like that, don't you?
Cairns needs the same iniative, and if whinging and crying is how you get it, then so be it. Your argument here is really pointless.
2) If Cairns had a decent stadium and more seating capacity for Cowboys and Fury home games then maybe they would play up there more often. I mean, Barlow Park won't exactly cut it for national sporting teams. However, in fairness Cazalys is pretty good for NAB cup AFL games. If and when Cairns gets a team? hmmm, Cronulla Sharks wanted to move up to Cairns from mememory, but that was mothballed very early on-due to LACK of support, infrastructure and facilities. It's only the local rag that doesn't support Cowboys and Fury, I'd say most people in Cairns do.
So there are my facts (with actual references-surprise).

In relation to your reply Mick....
1) The "$20million" that Townsville reaped from the V8's is questionable considering the local businesses and other community members are disputing that...I remember reading the Townsville bully on that and to me it looked like figures plucked from the air...
2) IF Cairns had a decent stadium then everything would change right?? I seriously seriously doubt that considering The Cowboys & Fury are very reluctant to give up thier position in Townsville just for the sake of "Cairns people". Everyone in Cairns & the Far North know they are Townsville teams.. In all honesty i wished the Cowboys & Fury would just change thier name to the Townsville Cowboys & Fury. This would save them the headache of trying to represent everyone but themselves.

Attention to all those who actually waste their time trying to prove which city is better than the other one: WAKE UP! I mean, let's deal with the facts here. Townsville had 4 national sporting teams, a mining refinery, military ba<x>se and a world-renowned University. Cairns has Tourism and a host of great attractions. It is true that Cairns is struggling the most now (GFC) because it is solely reliant on Tourism. This needs to change, but I can't see it happening anytime soon. Townsville on the other hand will probably fair ok because it's got a diversified economy. However, it needs a face lift, which is where the mall redevelopment comes in. That's about it guys. Having lived in a real city like Brisbane, I laugh at both sides pathetic attempts to upstage each other. I suppose that old sayings true: small minds hold alot of dirt. Appreciate where you live (Cairns or Townsville) and leave it at that. I can tell you now that many people down South envy where we live. Whether that be Cairns or Townsville. Stop the childish fighting and MOVE FOWARD TOGETHER or else continue this pointless mudslinging. By the way, I travel between Cairns and Townsville for uni so I know when people buls*&t about each city. I'm no fool. Just my two cents.

Oh please dude its all in the name of fun...Ask anyone what they think of Townsville and they will tell you its a hole! ask anyone what they think of Cairns and they will tell you its paradise mate.. I cant see Townsville supporting 4 national sports team on its own...Face it Townsville without the support of the other sister up the road (Beautiful Cairns) you wouldnt be spoilt with all those home games...losers!

Actually there is no choice at all
As you drive into Townsville you keep thinking does it get any better than this
It does once you get to the Esplanade and the Esplanade only
Cairns is lovely from the way in from South and North. You have the Daintree, Northern Beaches, Tablelands then Cairns with it's beautified roadways, Heritage Building, the Esplanade, Lagoon, c*****, Restaurants, Resorts, Outer Reef Trips and much much more. Going south many small beaches all the way to Brownsville.
Keep driving through Townsville and enjoy the real Far North Queensland, it's beauty and the wonderfull, warm, intelligent people that choose to live here and not in Townsville.
North Queensland Cowboys? North Queensland Fury? yeah right! why the hell have teams with NQ on if they are only playing in the one city? why cant those Townsville idiots running those teams just call themselves: TOWNSVILLE COWBOYS, TOWNSVILLE FURY, BROWNSVILLE COWBOYS, DULLSVILLE FURY?
Seriously Townsville you can keep your sports teams because we in Cairns dont give a stuff! your pla<x>yers live and play in Townsville only and therefore you shouldnt have to include Cairns in everything....im sick to death of having being represented by Townsville ba<x>sed teams!
Could the Cairns Post please stop printing colour paged stories about these teams... they are just a waste of newspaper space and ink!
In closing i must say: DOWN THE COWBOYS AND FURY AND UP THE CAIRNS TAIPANS (the only genuine Cairns team representing Cairns' interest)

Umm.. how can you call Townsville better than Cairns?
Your ONE Island... a Joke.
Your night life in Flinders St East... a Joke.
Your parking in the city... what parking? ... a Joke.
Your shops are never open, year round. Nothing open late EVERY night.
Your International Tourism... non existent
Your Domestic Tourism... non existent
Your restaurants... just waiting for the Cairns tourists to arrive before they go bust.
Your Financial Institutions... can't weather the storm.
Your Potholes (yeah, there's some road around them)
I guess though, Townsville does have one thing going for it... the roads out of it. Everyone loves the roads out.
Go on, go for a swim, go swim up Little Crystal Creek, up a road right out of town, under a road bridge.
Its so far away from the rest of world no one cares about you. Even the backpackers drive right through it. Not even thinking of stopping.
So please continue your current Dengue and Ross River Fever outbreaks, playing around on your fake strand with crocs and stingers in the netsand wishing you were a real city and had just 1% of the Cairns tourist $$$$...because no one else cares about Brownsville. Even the weather mostly skips Townsville off the national weather in favour of Cairns.

Sorry Brownsville, you cannot get even close to such a Majestic and Progressive City as Cairns. The only thing going for your dust bowl is the road west and north. Thus li<x>nking southern Australia with the true tropical north. As for the right and heroic CC, he but a rose or should I say a tropical rose of the north.
